in Brooklyn Maine where we anchored for the night. The next morning I went to say hello to Greg Rossell who was teaching the Boat Building Fundamentals class. I had taken Greg's class a few years ago and had brought home one of the whitehalls that we were building. I showed Greg and his class the pictures of the completed boat. That day, we still had overcast skies and fog but the wind had calmed down. We left Eggomoggin Reach and headed off to Winter harbour. The yacht club there was still all shut down for the winter so we spend a quiet night at a mooring. The next day was pouring rain with a south east wind that made it very hard to see the lobster pots. After first trying to head on east, we decided to turn around and head to Bar Harbour instead of fighting the weather all day. So, instead of spending Friday night in the middle of nowhere, we had a good seafood supper in town and Jason got to do some shopping for gifts for the family.

It cleared up nicely the next day and it was in flat calm seas the we made it to the beautiful Roque Island harbour. That evening, Jason showed me some pictures of the sailboat of one of his customer. He said that was the boat he would like to buy some day. The next morning we headed out along with an other boat that had anchored on the other side of the harbour. As we got closer to the other boat, we realized that it was the boat the Jason had shown me the pictures. What a coincidence! We were both headed back to Saint Andrews and got to chat with them. It turns out that I knew one of the crew too!

We arrived in Saint Andrews on Sunday June 14th just before 5 pm. That was the end of a nearly 5000 miles journey along the North American eastern seaboard over a period of eight months. Now it's time to get back to real life... at least for a while.

.

Solo New York to Gloucester

<img style="float:left; I figured that it was easier for me to get Luna on the davits alone rather than on deck. It was a nice sunny day when I anchored behind the Statue of Liberty for lunch to wait for the tide to turn in Hell Gate so I could go through the East River to Long Island Sound. By the end of the day, it had clouded over and there was a strong easterly wind in my nose when I entered Long Island Sound. I decided to Anchor behind City Island for the night where I was warmly greeted by fellow boaters on a neighbouring yacht. It turns out the lady was originally from Cap Breton Island. We had a pleasant conversation and they told me of what was available on City Island and even offered me a ride in their dingy. It had been a long day for me so I decided to turn in early instead.

In the morning, the sun was out again and I had a beautiful but almost windless day to start my journey up Long Island sound. I stopped at the Norwalk Islands and anchored next to the lighthouse. Once again, I got warmly greeted by fellow boaters. It was a local couple who were starting out on a beautiful 70 feet Swan that they had been fixing for the last few years. They are hoping to go off for an extended cruise and had many questions on how our trip had been. Later, the guardian of the lighthouse also dropped by to greet me and said to let him know if I needed anything. Once again, it was a very friendly place.

Memorial day was another beautiful day on the water with pleasure crafts of all types covering Long Island Sound. As one dismayed tug skipper said to an other on the radio, 'be careful, the kamikaze are out!' I had a very good day motor sailing in light breeze on the stay sail and far from the shipping lanes. I managed to cover the rest of Long Island Sound that day and anchored at Fisher Island. I also stayed there on the 23rd to wait out for favourable winds for Block Island Sound. I didn't quit get them. I still got 15 knot winds in the nose when I did the short hop though Block Island Sound over to Newport. I almost decided to stop in Point Judith but then decided to push on since the next couple of days weren't going to be any better. The engine's fuel pump had stated to have a slight leak and I needed to replace it. I wanted to get to Newport because I knew there was a Yanmar dealer there. It turns out, we had four days of fog and rain so I stayed in Newport till Saturday May 30th. That gave me time to get a new fuel pump, change it, and do my last oil and filter change on the engine for the trip. Somehow, it made me feel much closer to home to know that the last scheduled maintenance was done with!

I had noticed some stress cracks appear on the davits after the waves I had gone through off Judith Point on my way into Newport so I decided to put Luna back on deck for the next leg. It tuns out I got Luna up there fine on my own also. It even went a little easier than on the davits. I had a beautiful flat day out of Newport to get passed Sakonnet Point. What a change from last fall when we had head winds and 8 foot waves there! By the time I got to Buzzards bay, it was a perfect sailing day. Unfortunately, I didn't feel comfortable raising the main sail up alone so I decided to motor sail with the stay sail instead. I made it to the entrance of Cape Cod Canal and decided to pick up a mooring from Onset Marina for the night. There was an other Canadian flagged sail boat anchored nearby and I got to meet them. They were from Fredericton and were also heading home. We would meet up regularly for the rest of the trip.

The favourable tide through the canal started at 10 am the next day and that was when I headed out. I didn't want to wait too long because the forecast for the afternoon was for increasing winds and thunderstorms. That is exactly what we got. Luckily the wind was in the back and was pushing me north. As I got closer to Scituate, where I was planning to spend the night, the winds got to over 25 knots. I had to take the wheel as the auto pilot was starting to get overwhelmed by the following seas. Scituate harbour is very nice and protected though and I was glad to pick up a mooring there just before the thunder clouds came rolling by. The mooring fee includes a shuttle service to shore so I was able to go take a shower at the harbour master's office as well as do groceries. As it turns out, the thunder storms missed Scituate that day but I still got a nice picture of the rainbow at sunset.

The next day, June 1st, I had a perfect day to continue my trip. Once, I got past the Boston Harbour shipping lanes, I shut down the engine and sailed to the Gloucester harbour entrance with both head sails. I decided to wait for my friend Jason there. We would face the Maine lobster traps together.

Hot New York

.

Annapolis, Cape May and a crew change

<img style="float:left; D canal to wait overnight for the tide to turn. Currents in the canal can reach 2 knots so it can turn a 2 hour trip into a 4 hour trip easily if you don't go with the tide. The next day was very windy with gust over 30 knots. The trip through the canal is sheltered so it went very well. The Delaware is not sheltered so going down to Cape May that day was out of the question. We anchored in front of Delaware City in a relatively sheltered spot and settled down early for a bouncy night. It did give us time to finish the autopilot installation so the next day in almost perfect weather (now no wind at all!) we let Pegasus steer herself to Cape May. The next step is going to be the New Jersey coast and New York. That is out in the open Atlantic so we will check for the next weather window for that.

New Jersey jusqu'à New York.

A Canuck in Washington

The month of April is already over and so is our trip home. While Genny is back in St-Andrews hard at work for an other season at the Huntsman Ocean Sciences' Aquarium, I am on my way back to Pegasus to sail her to New Brunswick. On my way, I have just spent a couple days site seeing in Washington DC and checking out a couple of the Smithsonian museums. On my tours I have found that I was not the only 'Canadian' enjoying the US capital, although I don't think that these geese have ever made it up to Canada. On the other hand, I was graciously hosted in Washington by Genny's cousins, Louis and Marie-Helene. Thank-you. Tomorrow we are heading down to Hampton and Louis will join me to sail the next leg up the Chesapeake to Annapolis.

Home sweet home

We have arrived in Montreal, and it is great to see family members, enjoying every moments with them ! We have 6 months of stories to share, so we are taking a whole week to do so. My mom came to pick us up in Hampton, and after visiting the area a bit (including the battleship "Wisconsin"), we took 2 days and a half to make it back to Montreal. The drive was a nice change, and when we spotted the first remnants of snow banks in upstate New York, we knew we were back up North. Now, we have to find a place to call our own in St. Andrews, so I can start my job next Tuesday. But I have to admit, I REALLY miss my boat !

.

Back in Hampton, Virginia

We are back in Hampton, near Norfolk, Virginia, and to our great surprise, we are anchored next to the 2 British sailboats that we had last seen in New York on the way down. What a small world ! We are having a good time visiting the area, waiting for my mom to come and meet us here on Monday, so we can drive back with her to Canada. This means that we are leaving our boat in the area for one month. Since we arrived early, we took our time to visit the Dismal Swamp State Park, and once in Hampton, we went to see the Virginia Air and Space museum. We received a lot of rain, but today, the sun is out and for once, we do not need to run the heater on board. We found a very friendly marina to store the boat, so we will spend some time to get her ready, and do a bit of maintenance so she's ready once Val comes back with his friends. For me, this is the end, however, but I am looking forward to seeing my family again, and to start working in St.Andrews for the summer months.

Still going back North

Why, do you ask ? Because we have to. Otherwise, we would stay down here, as the weather has been lovely. We have now reached Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and as expected, we are experiencing a few cold fronts. But overall, our trip back north is going very well. Our engine started smoking in Morehead City, but fortunately, we were still near the anchorage, so we quickly dropped the anchor again, and shut off the engine. After a thorough check up, we discovered that one of the water hoses had been leaking, preventing most of the water from cooling the engine. Luckily, we caught it in time, and were able to fix it with a brand new hose. Otherwise, now that we have very few bridges to wait for, the engine seems happier and works great.

The beginning of the end: The trip back north

All good things have to come to an end. My job starts again in April, so we have turned around to head back north. We spent a few very nice days in key Biscayne, sailing the Biscayne Bay, and meeting with other cruisers that were heading out to the Bahamas (including 2 Quebecers on their smaller sailboats). We met with the previous owners of Pegasus at the Miami Boat Show (it was so refreshing to see familiar faces from back home ! We had a great time !). But when came time to do the next 2 days full of bridges to cross, between Miami and Palm Beach, our engine said "enough" ! It was very tired of waiting at idle while each bridge opened for us. So we got very worried that it would let go. But it held on, and we did it (one day, we cleared 16 bridges, one after the other !). After this little bit, the bridges are more spaced out. We are now in Vero Beach again, rafted to a motorsailer from Delaware. The owner is very friendly and helped Val install our radar on our mast, since our radar pole broke again (after some powerboats left a huge wake in the narrow canal not far from Miami. Pegasus really got tossed around). Thank goodness we have those metal steps to climb the mast, but Val still needed a Bosun chair (the kind that includes a harness) so he could be more comfortable up there while drilling holes for the screws. Not an easy task ! Today, we're gonna check our dear engine to make sure it can take us further without problems, and tomorrow, if the north winds die down, we will continue our journey towards Cape Canaveral to see a shuttle launch on the 27th (although the sun is out, and it's tempting to just stay south, where there are no snow storms !).

Toutes bonnes choses doivent prendre fin, malheureusement.

Miami Beach

We have arrived in Miami Beach, but even though it's sunny, it is not as warm as we had hoped. To get here, we had to go through the busiest part of the canal. Just to give an example, we had to go under 25 swing bridges in just 2 days for the last few miles. This means calling over to the bridge tenders, one at a time, to get them opened (our mast does not fit under most of them), and each has its own schedule. Some of them open on request. We did this part on weekdays, to avoid the weekend crowd. Millionnaire mansions line the canal on each side, each more luxurious than the other. Some of them are as big as some hotels ! Once near Miami Beach, we found this lovely quiet lagoon next to Oleta Park, where many canadian cruisers choose to anchor. We really enjoyed it. But we knew once we would reach Miami Beach itself, we would no longer have this kind of setting. It's a big city, with lots of traffic and regulations. We did stay one night in a marina, and took the bus into South Beach. We took lots of pictures of the awesome Art Deco hotels and restaurants, and went shopping on Lincoln road, a pedestrian shopping street.

Yesterday, we anchored next to Jungle Island, where they moved the old Parrot Jungle, and it's now a great exhibit of different kinds of animals, including shows and a big flamingo lake. We went to visit the place today and we totally enjoyed the parrot show, which I had seen twice before when I was a young girl visiting my grand-mother in Florida. We can still hear the parrots screaming from our anchorage ! Some of the animals looked a bit cold, as we have the north winds blowing, with the lowest temperatures of the winter so far in this area. Even the monkeys were all wrapped in the thick wool blankets they were provided ! Brrr....

Brrr....

Cold Daytona Beach and warm Vero Beach

We spent a few days in Daytona Beach, but unfortunately, we saw nothing ! The cold wind was blowing, and the temperatures dropped below freezing at night, so we ended up staying aboard, with the heater on again. The day we decided to leave the anchorage, we had to wear our hats, scarves and gloves to sail down to the next stop. A little frustrating. But it slowly got warmer, and after 3 days, we reached Vero Beach on a Friday. We decided to spend the whole week-end here, since the ICW canal is full of boating traffic then, when everyone is out fishing. Lots of power boats means lots of huge wakes, which are not comfortable. Fortunately, the summer-type weather has arrived, and we spent a lovely day at the beach on Saturday, while we relaxed at the marina on Sunday. It is a very long dinghy ride to get groceries on the other side of town (rowing across Indian River), and I'm glad Val is in excellent shape to get me there ! We always have a dolphin escort alongside as well. Monday, we decided to try the local free bus rides to town, so Val could get a new oil pump to do an oil change, since ours died on us. We are planning to leave tomorrow, if the weather holds.

Going further south

We finally left St.Augustine, reluctantly, to move again further south. I understand you folks back home in Canada are having a big cold snap, well, to make you feel better, we are having it too. It reaches all the way down to mid-Florida. I know, I know, minus 1 Celsius is nothing compared to what you guys are experiencing, but for Florida locals, it's stressful. Everyone is covering up their fragile tropical plants. We also had a couple days of rain. So that's why we had decided to stay put for another week. But this morning, the weather was right, and we crossed the famous Bridge of Lions, to move on. On the way there, we had a big surprise when we saw, anchored just before the bridge, the sailboat "Ghost Dance" from our home town, St.Andrews ! The last time we had spoken was right before we left, on October 5th. What a coincidence ! We also met some nice folks from Sherbrooke, the day before, travelling in their camper, both interested to know how our trip went, as they wanted to do the same thing someday. Lots of Canadians down here !

Relaxing in St. Augustine

St.Augustine is still warm and sunny. We are awaiting a package from home, so we are taking it easy. We rigged our little dinghy for sailing her in the lagoon we are anchored in. We are finally doing some sailing in Florida ! We are also enjoying the good catches for supper. The fish, like the grouper, is excellent. And the shrimp are just perfect ! Back in Georgia, we passed a group of fishermen that were tossing their nets into the waters of a bay. A young one came to see us with his dory, and showed us some freshly caught jumbo pink shrimp. He asked if we wanted to buy some. I couldn't refuse ! We bargained the price down, and I ended up with a bucket full. There is nothing like fresh shrimp with garlic and herb sauce ! Tonight, we will get something for the barbecue.

Georgia and Northern Florida

Sorry, but there is not a lot of wifi signals in the beautiful wild marshes of Georgia. To recap, we spent a very quiet but warm Christmas day in Beaufort. Then we spent a few days to cross Georgia by anchoring in very remote but serene salt water marshes with the dolphins and the egrets. We ended up in Jekyll Island for a few days as the wind was blowing too hard, but we're glad we did, as this is a lovely place to visit with lots of walking trails and a sandy beach on the Atlantic side. This is the island where the richest business men (the Goodyears, Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, etc...) of the early 1900's spent their winters in lavish cottages, which are now museums open to the public. We took lots of pictures ! The next day, we made our way to Northern Florida, spending the night in Fernandina Beach. It's a small town with historic homes, but we did get the smells from the pulp and paper industry up wind from the moorings, so needless to say we didn't stay long. The next few days, we spent the night in the last of the wild marshes before "suburbia" Florida starts, and we had a real wildlife show one evening when a school of fish was trying to escape the dozens and dozens of egrets, herons, storks, ibises, sterns, ospreys, pelicans and diving ducks from becoming supper. Everybody would move as one, up and down the creek, chasing down the many small, leaping fishes. It beats watching TV.

We arrived in St. Augustine 2 days later, and we are now spending a week here, as summer weather has finally greeted us. Now we know we are in Florida. We visited the Alligator Farm nearby, which is more like a reptile zoo, with many exotic birds and mammals as well. We walked across the bridge to town, with all its small shops lining the streets. The buildings are some of the oldest in the States, and they have a lovely Spanish style, with ornate architectural details. We also walked to the beach on the other side, but it's a good hour to get there unfortunately.

Merry Christmas, from South Carolina

Merry Christmas everyone ! I always keep forgetting to mention that Val and I thoroughly enjoy reading your comments on this blog. We miss our friends and family from back home, and it's like we're not too far from you, even though we are miles away.

Anyways, it's been a while since the last update, but we've crossed the Cape Fear river to spend a night in Southport. Then we made our way to Myrthle Beach, where we stayed at a marina, since there were no good places to anchor. We prefer to anchor, since there is no cost (and like most cruisers, we are on a budget), but it's nice to have the amenities once in a while. The next day was a little foggy, but it cleared up enough for us to go through the Rock Pile, which is a narrow cut through a rock formation, so it's not a place to go aground ! Little scary, but it went well, and we ended up in the Wacamaw river, where we had to dodge floating dead tree trunks and branches. Some of them were very large ! We anchored in one of the rivers flowing into the Wacamaw, and we spent one of the most peaceful nights, surrounded by owls answering each other, and the sounds of treefrogs. The next day, we spent it in Georgetown, where the temperature reached 26 degrees Celsius !!! We had a big day ahead of us the next day, and we anchored in the middle of a marsh, as it was the only thing around. That's when we first heard those little snapping shrimps of warmer waters. They are apparently 1 inch long, but they make this snap-crakle-pop noise under the hull, which sounds like bacon in a frying pan. Very weird !

The next day, we arrived in Charleston, but the only place to anchor is on the opposite side of town. We had to spend the next day there as well, since the winds were strong, and it was cold again, so we decided to spend the day walking the distance to reach the shops and the busy streets, full of Christmas shoppers. The amazing thing about this town are all the huge plantation style homes in the residential neighbourhoods. Very lavish ! Next, after a brief stay at anchor in the Stono River, we arrived in beautiful Tom Point Creek, which is a perfect place to anchor. I chose this spot to try and catch me some crabs for supper using a little piece of beef jerky. Well, with Val on net duty, and me pulling up the line every now and then, we managed to catch 2 large crabs (5 and 7 inches) called Blue crabs. There are quite lovely, with a deep indigo blue color under the legs and claws, but they were even more delicious to eat (after it took me an hour to get all the meat out). Yesterday, the 24th, we arrived in Beaufort, South Carolina. We decided to spoil ourselves for Christmas and stay at a marina across the river. The manager was kind enough to drive us to the grocery store to get fresh foods (including some turkey!), and even to the marine store for Val to get an oil filter. We really appreciated it. Today, we called our family members, and even talked to a friend of ours who gave us a call. We miss you all !!!

Merci beaucoup !!!

Dolphins, seahorses, a tornado and a grounding

Well, it's been a series of ups and downs. First of all, before we left Morehead city, Val decided to dinghy ashore to visit this cute little island in the afternoon, leaving me aboard Pegasus. All of a sudden, we got pouring rain, and the sky was very very dark just south-west of us. After a couple of lightning bolts, I decided to turn on the VHF radio on the weather channel, and all I heard was : "the tornado is heading towards Morehead city for 16h10". It was now 16h05. I panicked ! I tried to call Val, but he could not hear me across the waters. But he did show up on the shores of the island about 10 minutes later, and I yelled at him to come get me, as I wanted off this boat !!! Somehow, I would feel a lot safer on land.

Well, by that time, the dark sky went north, and we didn't see the tornado. Which is fine with me ! We decided to stay an extra night, to let a gale go by. The next morning, it was nice and sunny, so Val took me to the island, and we walked around it. In the sand, at low tide, I found a dried up seahorse, but as I picked it up, it moved, so it was still alive. It was only 2 inches long, but I quickly put it back in the seawater, and it started swimming to a nearby seaweed to hook on to it with its tail. Neat animals ! We actually left the next morning, and we anchored in Mile Hammock Bay, which is a military dredged bay. After a good night's sleep, we carried on, and that's when we saw our first dolphins !!! A whole group of them, crossing our bow. Later on, we saw a couple more that actually followed us, so close to the sides, that we could have touched them ! I took some pictures and a video. It is very emotional to see them so close. It really looks like they enjoy following slow moving boats like ours. It was the beginning of a very good day, however, we started to cross some ocean inlets while transiting the ICW, and when the tidal current is strong, it pushes our boat sideways, which is a little scary. Just after Wrightsville Beach, we crossed another inlet, but a fast motorboat was coming out of it, so we veered to starboard to give him a little more space. Unfortunately, this canal is very narrow, and has lots of shoals on either sides, so you guessed it, we went aground ! It was in soft sand, so no damage done, and we were at low tide. So we sat and waited for the tide to raise a little, and with the anchor set towards deeper water, we pulled ourselves out of it. However, the engine started to hesitate, so we decided to go back to Wrightsville Beach slowly, and take a look at it. We think it did not like idling so long in the sandbank, and the injectors were fouled. the next day, it ran fine, and before we headed out, we went to see the actual beach on the ocean side. We could hear the waves from our anchorage, and it was a very warm sunny morning. So it was a treat to just relax on the sand, feeling as if we had finally reached the "South" !

Je me sentais mieux a terre.

.

Getting warmer

For once now, we are finally getting some warmer weather. We are presently in Morehead City, NC, just next door to Beaufort. We had to get there in dense fog, as the warmer air was interacting with the colder water, but with all our electronic equipment onboard, everything went fine. It's still pretty stressful, however (I feel like a blind woman then). Before that, we spent a couple of nights at anchor, and one night in Oriental, in a very cute little marina/Inn. It was all decorated for Christmas, including a set of holiday songs playing in the yard ! It put me in the mood for setting up my own little Christmas tree in the boat, with tiny little colorful LED lights at night !

I have to tell the story of how we rescued another sailboat that went aground in the Alligator-Pungo river canal. We were following him and suddenly, his engine quit, and the very strong winds pushed him onto the bank. There is nothing for miles and miles on either side of this narrow canal, so we went close to him and grabbed a line so we could tow him out. But to no avail. So Val remembered a trick he used with a friend of his back home, where we grab his halyard that's attached to the top of his mast, and we pull sideways so that his boat tips slightly, and then his keel frees itself from the mud. It worked ! They were so relieved that they offered to buy us supper once we reached Bellhaven. Unfortunately, once we came out of the canal, the waves were so steep that we decided to go seek shelter in a small bay instead. Oh well ! Life goes on... We were just happy to have helped him.

The North Carolina hospitality

Wow... So far, we have had the best welcome yet since we have crossed over to North Carolina. It started at the visitor center in the Dismal Swamp. The ladies saw that we were cold, so they gave us a cup of coffee to bring back onboard (litterally... they gave us the ceramic cup AND the coffee !), and offered their computer so we could update our blog. We signed their boaters' logbook. Last night, we slept at anchor just before Elizabeth city. After fueling up and taking full bottles of propane at a marina, where we met these people from Ontario in a boat very similar to ours (Bayfield 29), we arrived in this city just after lunch, to be greeted by the mayor himself ! The dock here is free for 48 hours, and a small team of retirees recommended all the "good" places to eat, shower, do laundry, and even get food delivered to us for free. They even volunteer to drive us around if we need more propane ! We are definitely staying here for a couple of days (why not ? They have a farmers market this Saturday morning... gotta go!), because the winds won't die down until Saturday afternoon.

Hey bien...

.

Dismal Swamp canal

After spending a couple of days re-stocking on supplies in Hampton, we have finally entered the Intracoastal Waterway, a man-made canal using existing rivers and bays that goes all the way to Florida. Pegasus had to go through her first lock, which only goes up a few feet, into the Dismal Swamp canal, which is one of 2 routes in Virginia. It is the prettier one for sailboats, and has a lot less traffic. The best way to describe it, it's like navigating through a ditch in the middle of a forest ! Lots of wildlife, and trees that are so close to the boat that we can reach out and trouch the branches. We have one more lock to go through, and a bunch of more bridges before we reach Elisabeth City, North Carolina.

The Chesapeake is behind us

We have finally arrived in Hampton, Virginia, where the Chesapeake Bay ends, and the Intracoastal Waterway starts heading south to Florida. We're still so far away from this mystical place, it seems like. We spent the last week anchored in different little bays, sometimes in snow squalls, waiting for good weather windows, which are few and far between this time of year. The other nasty thing about this leg of the trip, is that the Chesapeake is very busy with barge and tug traffic. We wanted to avoid them at all costs, but the bay is narrow, and everyone goes through the same channels. So it's with a sigh of relief that we're planning to spend a couple of days in Hampton, to stock up on groceries and do some much needed engine maintenance. Last night was the American Thanksgiving, so I decided to put together a worthy supper with whatever food I had left onboard (some canned chicken soup as the "turkey", some dried cranberries, some yams, pickled beets, and homemade cornbread made with the last egg!). On the up side, we saw our first pelicans !

Snow and mosquitos

Well, it's a world of contrast out here. We spent a whole day going up the Delaware Bay, in total fog (feels like we are back in New Brunswick!), and we docked in Delaware City at sunset. It was very warm, and I actually had to kill a mosquito that found its way into the cabin. It was a very quiet and dark night, so Val decided to go walk on the long dock that lines the very narrow creek, only to find that the dock Pegasus was on suddenly ended. He quickly realized that the waters in the Delaware river are quite warm this time of year !!! He was soaking wet ! The next day, it was a gale out there, but we made it to the C&D canal, which links the Delaware Bay with the Chesapeake, and it was very sheltered. But at the other end of the canal, it was quite choppy, so we pulled in to this small marina for protection. The owner was amazed to see us there, cause he claims there is only a few feet of water near the dock. Thank goodness Pegasus only has 3' 9" draft, but we'd have to wait for high tide again to get out.

High tide happened at midnight the next day, and the winds finally calmed down, so off to bed we went at supper time, to wake up at 23h30. We got out safely, and motored until 5am, trying to avoid the tugs and barges in the dark. Even when they are lighted like a Christmas tree, they blend in with the lights on shore in the distance. At 5am, tired of the chop, we anchored in a quiet bay, and only slept for 2 hours, but it was worth every minute of it ! We motorsailed the rest of the day until Annapolis. We met with my cousins the next day, and we had a wonderful time with them. They took such good care of us: we ate Chesapeake crabcakes in a wonderful restaurant overlooking the harbour, they offered their car for us to get much needed groceries, and helped us bring all those bags (and water jugs!) to the dinghy. We invited them on board, just as snow flurries started to fall on Pegasus ! Yes, it now feels like winter here, and we are still very grateful to have our heater, even if it barely keeps the cabin above 10 degrees C.

.

We survived the New Jersey coast

It's a long coast, open to the Atlantic ocean, but we had 2 calm days to do it. We also did our first trip at night ! Well.... partially. We left New York at sunset, since the winds were too strong in the afternoon, and we arrived 2 hours later, in the dark, at Great Kills Harbour. We knew it was a good experience to have, and we had all the chances on our side (great full moon, GPS, Radar, and our good friends on Velissa waiting for us at the harbour). What a feeling to see the New York lights get brighter and brighter, even though it was a little stressful. The next day, we had a long day to reach Barnegat harbour, and the day after, another long day to reach Cap May, at the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Once again, we arrived there in the dark, since the days are getting shorter. Cap May is the sport fishing mecca of the east coast. Right now, stripped bass is in season, and they are catching lots of them (I keep craving fish for supper for some reason). Tomorrow, the winds should be light enough for us to go up the Delaware Bay, towards the C&D canal.

Pegasus in New York

What a feeling to arrive in New York by boat ! It is visually overwhelming. Lots of tall buildings right next to the water, lots of helicopters landing on your head, lots of ferries, police patrol boats (a little intimidating), water taxis, barges, tugs, cargo ships, etc... We passed through Hell Gate (which is nothing compared to our turbulent Letete Passage or Old Sow back home) and down the East river, to round off Manhattan point, and go up the Hudson river to reach 79th street boat basin, where there is a small marina, just blocks away by foot from Central Park and Broadway street. We spend a few days here, to wait for a weather window. We took the time to visit Central Park, which still has lots of Fall colors, famous Times Square, the Empire State building (too expensive to go up, though!), and the World Trade Centre site. The food is good if you stick to the small specialty restaurants (stay away from the hot dog stands !). This afternoon, we will load up on water and fuel (and veggies), and head to Great Kills harbour, just outside New York harbour.

Just to recap, we had left Mystic river to go spend a night in Branford. The next day was a long one, since we went all the way down Long Island Sound to Larchmont. We (us and our canadian friends on Velissa) had to leave this harbour at around 6am to make it to Hell Gate when the current was not too strong. It was a great surprise to meet up with our British friends aboard Black Thorn and Hanna right down the East river, after not seeing them for a week ! It is definitely a small boating world.

Mystic Seaport

One word to describe Mystic Seaport Museum... WOW !... After leaving Point Judith Monday, we went up the Mystic river to the museum, where we are spending 2 nigths. They have lots and lots of traditional wooden boats, all displayed along a recreated old time village. We are docked next to a canadian couple on their boat, who we met in Newport. They are also heading south. Mystic is a gorgeous little town, full of Fall colors and people who obviously love to live and work here !

It's a cold one !

We woke up yesterday morning in Bristol, NH, with just a few degrees to share in the cabin. Again, we're glad to have the heater, but it can barely keep up when the wind is blowing. We still managed to dress warmly to go and visit the Herreshoff Museum, a very interesting place to learn about this famous yacht designer. We saw lots of gorgeous original boats in their big warehouse, along with lots of pictures from the turn of last century. The next day, we sailed into Newport, NH, the sailing capital around here. For the second time, we ran into the people sailing in "Black Thorn", which also stayed in St.Andrews for a bit last month. Val and I visited a yacht restoration school (yes, Val was drooling a bit over the tools), and we grabbed supper before heading back to Pegasus. Right now, we are trying to figure out which day will be best to head out around the coast again, as the wind is still not favorable, but is suppose to calm down over the weekend. We will stay tuned to our VHF !

Good days and bad days

Well, it's definitely Fall, with one gale warning after the other. We ended up staying 1 week in Gloucester, with the lovely and helpful people of this port city. Then came one good day of sailing before the next gale would hit, so we made a dash across Massachussetts bay to reach the Cape Cod canal. That was 45 nautical miles in 10 hours. We slept at the marina at the entrance, and crossed the canal the next morning. We took refuge in Marion, to weather the next gale, which happened overnight, including thunder and lightning.

The bad day happened when we decided to leave Marion for Newport, as the swells were still present on the ocean, but because Buzzards Bay is protected, we didn't see this phenomenon until later. We were happy to be able to duck into Sakonnet river, because it was way too much for Pegasus (and her crew) to handle. We landed in Tiverton, Rhode Island, which is very protected from the swells, being 1 hour away from the coast, behind a breakwater. The next day was very warm. We walked around in short sleeves, admiring the gorgeous Fall colors. We are now Tuesday, and guess what ? Yes, another gale is blowing ! So we are going to wait until tomorrow to go visit Bristol, on our way to Newport. Lots of maritime museums await us !

The great Boston

Since the weather is calling for a lot of winds and waves for the next couple of days, we decided to stay put in Gloucester. Today however, we took the commuter train to Boston for an afternoon of fun ! We ate a scrumptious lunch at the famous Quincy Market, and then went to the New England Aquarium. Quite a bit bigger than Huntsman ! We arrived just in time to see the caretakers hand-feed the penguins, and other creatures like the sharks and sea turtles. It was nice to relax and spend a day elsewhere than on the boat for a change.

2 states behind us

We have finally arrived in Massachusetts, after going through Maine and New Hampshire. We can even see the skyscrapers of Boston rising from the distant waters (we're too far to see the actual shore). We spend a night just outside Portsmouth, NH, and since the strong winds were delayed a day, we decided to make it around Cape Ann the next day. This is the furthest we've been offshore yet. We had 6-foot swells, even though the wind was light, so Pegasus was rocking and rolling. She did great, and took us safely to Gloucester, where a very friendly harbormaster showed us an empty mooring for the night. Today, since they are calling for strong winds, we're gonna stay put and do an oil change for the engine, and maybe even bake some fresh bread. Thank God for our heater, because it is finally chilly outside.

Beautiful Kennebunkport

We just made it to Kennebunkport for the night. Beautiful sunny day, very little wind. But the last 2 days were spent in Portland, doing things other normal people do: laundry, shopping, and a hot shower ! Portland is a city, full of services. Val found some marine stores and got us some parts, and I found a huge natural food store that offered free delivery to the marina ! I went nuts. It was very windy yesterday, but a sailing school full of kids still went out and raced. They were flying ! We also went to visit the Narrow Gauge Train museum.

A day for shopping

We spent all of today in Portland, after spending a night last night, admiring the city lights from our mooring. Tomorrow, we have to start another leg of our voyage, and this is when I keep thinking: can we do this ? I really hope that the weather will cooperate. Pegasus has been very good to us so far. She may still bob up and down like a 10-foot tender on the big waves, but she stays afloat and I'm proud to say: nothing has been flying around in the cabin ! And Val had doubts... We arrived in Lubec to clear customs 2 hours later. We spent the night there, then had a wonderful productive day Monday, going all the way to Jonesport. We met a nice guy at the boatyard, who rented us a mooring for the night. But the next day proved difficult, as we tried to cross a bay with a strong west wind, and very steep waves. We turned into the wind, in the only harbour in this area for safety, Eastern Harbour. Being a small fishing boat harbour, we had to take a mooring suggested by a fisherman, but it was a small one and ended up dragging into another boat ! So we went to another group of boats, where another fisherman suggested a guest mooring, more solid. Thank goodness ! But it did make for a very nervous day overall. Today, Tuesday, was a lovely day on the other hand, sunny, very little wind, so we made it all the way to Bar Harbour, where we will stay at least for a day.

D day minus one... hopefully

Kyle was the biggest non-event ever ! If anything, today's thunderstorms gave us more wind and rain , so yes, we got delayed a bit more. We are going to sleep on land tonight as it hits, and keep our fingers crossed. If all goes well, I am planning to go to St Stephen for a last big set of groceries tomorrow, and Val is going to finish sorting out storage for the things we are not bringing.

Pegasus' Journey

Hello, after six months of preparations, we are almost ready to start our journey. Since Genny started at Huntsman aquarium and I left Xerox, I got most of the systems on Pegasus checked, repaired, replaced or removed. We have a new septic tank, new valves on all the rear through hulls, reworked electrical system with new batteries and solar panel. I reworked and simplified the fresh water system. I also made new boards to replace the leaky companionway doors. I still have a long list of things to do before we leave next week. Among them, installing the windlass, getting the fuel line installed for the new diesel heater and sorting out an intermittent electrical problem with the starter.

Val
