Pegasus in New York

What a feeling to arrive in New York by boat !  It is visually overwhelming. Lots of tall buildings right next to the water, lots of helicopters landing on your head, lots of ferries, police patrol boats (a little intimidating), water taxis, barges, tugs, cargo ships, etc... We passed through Hell Gate (which is nothing compared to our turbulent Letete Passage or Old Sow back home) and down the East river, to round off Manhattan point, and go up the Hudson river to reach 79th street boat basin, where there is a small marina, just blocks away by foot from Central Park and Broadway street. We spend a few days here, to wait for a weather window. We took the time to visit Central Park, which still has lots of Fall colors, famous Times Square, the Empire State building (too expensive to go up, though!), and the World Trade Centre site. The food is good if you stick to the small specialty restaurants (stay away from the hot dog stands !). This afternoon, we will load up on water and fuel (and veggies), and head to Great Kills harbour, just outside New York harbour.

Just to recap, we had left Mystic river to go spend a night in Branford. The next day was a long one, since we went all the way down Long Island Sound to Larchmont. We (us and our canadian friends on Velissa) had to leave this harbour at around 6am to make it to Hell Gate when the current was not too strong. It was a great surprise to meet up with our British friends aboard Black Thorn and Hanna right down the East river, after not seeing them for a week !  It is definitely a small boating world.

C'est tout une expérience d'arriver a New York par bateau. Le traffic sur l'eau est incroyable: traversiers, bateaux police, cargos, remorqueurs, bateaux taxis, et des tonnes d'helicopteres qui survolent le tout. En arrivant par le East River, on est rapidement entouré de grattes-ciels. En contournant la pointe de Manhattan, on a rattrapé nos amis sur Black Thorn et Hanna, qu'on avait perdu de vue pendant une semaine. C'est un petit monde ! Nous avons ensuite remonté la Hudson pour aller a la marina de la 79ieme rue, a quelques pas de Broadway et de Central Park. On a pris quelques jours a visiter les incontournables Times Square, le Empire State Building, Central Park avec ses belles couleurs d'automne et le site du World Trade Centre. Cet apres-midi, nous et nos amis canadiens sur Velissa allons faire le plein de diesel, fruits et légumes, eau, et allons prendre le chemin vers Great Kills, juste a l'extérieure du port de New York pour attendre que la météo soit favorable pour continuer.

Pour recapituler, nous avions quitté Mystic pour aller passer la nuit a Branford. Le lendemain, nous avons fait beaucoup de millage pour finir de longer le Long Island Sound, pour aboutir a Larchmont. Il fallait quitter Larchmont le lendemain vers 6am pour etre a Hell Gate au bon moment, quand le courant n'est pas trop fort. En réalité, ce n'est rien a comparer avec les courants que l'on retrouve dans la Baie de Passamaquoddy. Vivre a St. Andrews nous a au moins donné l'expérience pour les courants et les tourbillons qui viennent avec eux !
